Installation of Kight Off-Grid KV-2 Streetlights Marks Milestone in Colchester's Sustainable Development

Essex County Council (ECC) and Colchester City Council (CCC) have taken another significant step towards achieving their ambitious sustainability goals with the installation of two Kight Off-Grid KV-2 hybrid wind and solar streetlights outside Rowan House, the City Council’s head office and administrative hub. The installation, part of a wider initiative to reduce carbon emissions and embrace renewable energy, signifies a milestone in Colchester’s commitment to combat climate change. The KV-2 streetlights, powered entirely by free green renewable energy, boast zero carbon emissions. The lights are equipped with a unique hybrid system that harnesses both wind and solar energy simultaneously, ensuring year-round continuous operation. Brandon Weston, Head of Sales and Marketing at Kight Off-Grid, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The installation of our KV-2 streetlights not only demonstrates Colchester’s commitment to sustainability but also showcases the effectiveness of off-grid solutions in reducing carbon footprints. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these lights will have on the community.” The installation was carried out by SDE Contracts on behalf of Mitie Communities, as part of a broader partnership between Mitie and ECC to drive decarbonisation efforts across the region. Mitie and ECC have joined forces in a concerted effort to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions in ECC’s core estate by 2030. Rowan House has undergone extensive renovations aimed at optimising energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, with features such as energy-efficient LEDs and a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system.
